I'm Australian and have done a fair bit of travelling around the country in the last couple of years and have lived in different parts.

I am from Melbourne so would have to mention this first. Melbourne has:
1. Excellent shopping
2. Great Food (I recommend a trip to Lygon street in Carlton for Italian, Brunswick street in Fitroy for your more alternative foods.)
3. Great Entertainment: Crown Casino, Southbank, Melbourne Aquarium, Werribee Open range zoo, Melbourne Zoo, Queen Vic Markets, Federation Square..... so many to name!)
-Great Ocean Road is a good drive.... lots of beautiful scenery, apollo bay, torquay....... or head down the otherside to Phillip Island and see the fairy penguins.....
Would recommend that you take a look.

Now living in Perth. Alot smaller than Melbourne but just as interesting. Recommend a look at Kings Park, Scarborough beach, Cottesloe, Fremantle, Mandurah, Margaret River.......
Good nightspots in Northbridge (the club/pub district- recommend "The Shed" if you're up for a good time.)

Have done the drive up the coast of Western Australia- Can recommend:
Broome, lots of nice beaches up there, lots of culture.
Kununurra: small town in the middle of nowhere- but there are lots of interesting "australian" things to do. Bungle Bungle flights are operated out of the airport- quite interesting.

Not sure what else you are looking for but maybe take a look at some of these websites:
#
-good video diary of overseas visitors to a number of australian locations

-good listings on places to go in Australia

-Sorry can't help it- think you would like Melbourne- this webpage gives you all the information you could possibly need.....

Hope this helps you out. Happy Travelling!

All of Australias beautiful (yep Im an Aussie :)
If you like Bushwalking & outdoors type of stuff I recommend NT - gorgeous The blue mountains about 50 Kilometres west of Sydney is absolutely breathtaking.
Of course if youre into beaches etc you will have to go to Bondi, great beach, fabulous food & very tourist orientated.
It depends on what interests you.
Backpacker hostels if you dont want to spend alot on accommodation. I would research abit online you could get a good deal.
Hope you enjoy Australia :)

Edit : Melbournes the best for shopping.

Oh, the possibilities. It really does depend on what kind of person you are and what your seeking. Maybe post another Q with more personal info. You say touristy, then i imagine someone who likes the city, the east coast is for you. Arty, go to Melbourne. Hippy, go to the new south wales/ queensland border (beautifull area for buying a car and scooting around the coast) Beach bum, head north to Whitsundays and cairns. City freak, sydney. Wine lover, Adelaide. Nature lover, Tasmania (well suggested) West coast is a litle more spread out (refer to map), so if your only here for a few weeks its probably not the go. Make sure you do a bit of a nature tour, Australia is not complete without it, you migh not find it a special if you dont. If you want to do pretty city things go to Europe or America. Enjoy your trip.
