What requirements are needed to obtain a visa in Australia?

I would like to know if anyone out there knows what requirements are needed if moving from the UK to Australia? I know someone that gained the right to stay in Australia because she got married to an Aussie however they have split up after just over a year. If they no longer live together and she is infact single is allowed to remain in Australia?

the marriage must last at least 2 years to get a permanent visa, i think your friend may have to leave
she is best to ask the australian immigration dept
The marriage has to last at least two years but if there is domestic violence involved then there might be an option to stay in Australia. The domestic violence has to be proved by either a court ruling or police reports.
Apart from the spouse visa route, the only way to get a permanent visa is to qualify as a skilled migrant. You must have qualifications and experience in an occupation listed as being in need of workers and must meet character and health requirements. You must pass a points test or find an employer, close relative or state government to sponsor you.
Here are the occupations lists and information on skill recognition requirements: (the points test) (everything else)
Regarding the person you know who came on a spouse visa:
Spouse visas are issued on a 2 year temporary basis from the date of application. If the relationship is not ongoing after the 2 year waiting period, no permanent spouse visa will be issued. The person would then need to be able to qualify for a permanent visa on some other basis if they wish to stay permanently..
Marrying an Aussie will only get you a spousal visa, after two years of living in Australia you can apply for residency. There is lots of red tape to prove you are an actual couple and not married for migration purposes. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
I too know someone in a similar situation, this person chose to stay in Australia on a student visa and study for a year before she could apply for residency. I believe if you have been a victim of abuse there is another way around things, but obviously you wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Ordinarily there are many short term visas, such as Tourist visa (3 months), Student visa (12 months), Working holiday visa (12 months), etc… To move here permanently you can be sponsored by family or an employer (meaning they will provide for you and support you, basically keeps people of welfare as soon as they move here) or as a Skilled worker by being qualified and/or experienced in an occupation on the skilled occupation list.
All the legalities are here
I would recommend you to seek advice from an australian immigration site to give you some detailed and accurate information about visa for australia
