I keep on reading presumably american people going on about tumble-dryer sheets. They do have them in Australia and I have used them. I don’t see the difference in performance as compared to liquid fabric softener. Can someone please shed some light?

It may be a cultural thing, but many people don’t realize the harm dryer sheets pose to their dryers. What happens is the heat releases the chemical and excess gets blown out the vent. The problem is, it builds up on the lint screen and eventually slows the venting process so much the dryer has to work harder. It has been suggested this is the primary reason heat coils fail faster than what the manufacturer would consider normal.
To check your lint screen, take it out and run water over it in the sink. If you see puddling, you need to wash the screen with a mild detergent and stop using the dryer sheets. Water should run straight thru the screen.
Because they have only recently come out on the market. I love them, they make my house smell nice when i use my dryer. But i do agree with the guy above me.
I think the reason they use dryer sheets more in the US is because they’re more convenient.
You don’t have to “catch” the washer at the right time to add softener, you just pop a dryer sheet in when you put your clothes in the dryer.
If you keep your lint filter clean, ( I do mine after every single load ) and don’t overuse the dryer sheets, they do little or no harm to the dryer.
I had the same dryer for almost 10 years, and never had any problems. And it’s still working…. I gave it to my sister when I moved to Oz from the US - and she’s still using it. She’s only had to replace the belt.
